Frequently Asked Questions

Below are a list of general questions we are often asked about butler training, course information and the Australian Butler School.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us.

  • 1How long is the course?

    The course is 4 weeks.

Classes are held Monday to Friday 0900 – 1700.

The course is intensive and students must be prepared to dedicate time out of class hours to complete assessments and projects.

  • 2What are the admission requirements for the course?

You must be at least 18 years of age and have:

    • completed a NSW School Certificate (or equivalent) with one year full time study or work experience in the Hospitality industry or equivalent OR
    • at least two years full time or equivalent professional/work experience in the hospitality sector OR
    • demonstrated capacity through appropriate life experience to successfully complete the course.

For full details of admission and selection requirements, please refer to the Student Handbook.

  • 4How will I be assessed?

The Australian Butler School applies assessment processes, methods and tools that allow students to demonstrate attainment of required competencies in a holistic manner.

The emphasis is on gathering evidence that shows the synthesis of skills, knowledge and attitudes in performing the range of tasks required for competence.

There are a number of assessment methods including written assessments requiring short answers; group projects; simulations and role plays; observation; case studies; demonstration of practical skills; oral tests and questioning.

  • 5Does the School assist in placing successful graduates?

Absolutely.   Australian Butler Services, the placement branch of the business, has an extensive network of clients throughout Australia.  We also work closely with associated agencies in the UK, Europe and USA for those graduates able to work overseas.

As a small, expert team, we regard ourselves as service professionals rather than a placement agency and will continue to nurture your career from graduation to retirement!   One of the great benefits of the course is each member of our team will know you very well and in this business the match of personalities is as important as the standard of your skills.

  • 6Are your trainers professionally qualified?

All our trainers have extensive work experience in private residence and/or are experts in their particular fields. Trainers who do not possess minimum Level IV Certificate in Training and Assessment are supervised and guided by appropriately qualified trainers.

Our trainers and our training material are contemporary. Our trainers bring a wide range of skills and breadth of experience to the classroom that cannot be learned from a book or a manual.

  • 8What certification will I receive upon successful graduation?

You will receive a Statement of Attainment which recognizes not only that you have successfully qualified as a Butler / House Manager but have attained 8 units of competency from SIT30707 Certificate III Hospitality.

The Statement of Attainment issued is recognized nationally by all Registered Training Organisations and internationally by reputable agencies.

  • 9How do I apply for the course?

Complete the application form on the website or contact us by telephone or email and we will send one to you.  When submitting your application, be sure to check you have included/attached the requested documents and deposit.

  • 10What is involved in the student selection process?

Students must meet the admission requirements and address the student selection criteria described in the Student Handbook. In addition, all applicants are required to undergo an informal interview preferably in person but for those in remote or overseas locations, by video or telephone.

This process is not just for our benefit but to allow you to ask any niggling questions and to have a personal contact with us, so both parties feel confident in a successful outcome before you commit your valuable time and resources.

  • 11Will I have sufficient skills in only 4 weeks to work as a butler straightaway?

Yes, you will.  However, the scope of responsibility in your new role will depend in part on your prior skills and experience.  If you have extensive hospitality, or other relevant life experience, you will be able to manage a demanding role with comprehensive dimensions.

If you have less experience, you may wish to consider a supervised role in a structured house where you can consolidate and build your knowledge until you are confident in running a household yourself.  Australian Butlers will only submit you for those positions that fit your skill set and personality where we know you will perform best and meet your principal's expectations.

  • 12Do you offer a distance learning program?

No. We do not believe that you can learn the necessary skills via distance learning.

We also would not have the opportunity to develop a close, professional relationship with you which is critical to successfully matching our candidates with our clients.

  • 13How often is the butler training course conducted?

The course is held 3 times per year.  As a guide, the course is held in March, July and October.  Specific dates for each year can be found under Residential Butler Training / Course Information.

  • 14What should I wear when attending the butler course?

Smart, casual attire is appropriate for wear in the class room.  You should also bring a set of black and whites for work experience activities.  Your personal presentation throughout the course is assessed by your trainers and contributes to your overall assessment summary.

  • 15Why choose the Australian Butler School rather than another institution?

There are many valid reasons but in brief:

    • our training program is contemporary
    • our trainers are abreast of current industry trends
    • our trainers are experts in their fields and / or hold Certificate IV training and assessment qualifications
    • our School is a Government Registered Training Organisation
    • our placement rate for successful graduates is 85%
    • we continue to support our graduates throughout their careers
    • and most importantly, we understand that our reputation is reliant on the success of our graduates
